Martin de Porres Elementary/JHS
The Martin De Porres School was founded in 1972 in the Astoria Housing Projects in Queens. Due to the growth of the program, a larger facility was needed. As a result, the school was moved to Springfield Gardens in 1977. In September 2012, the Martin De Porres Elementary/Junior High School was again relocated to Elmont where we provide educational programs for nearly 180 students (male and female) in grades one through eight.
The Elementary/Junior High School is led by Principal John Galassi. John is an exceptional leader whose commitment to his students is unparalleled for the last 40 years. John directs a program that along with academics has a highly structured and supportive behavioral management program. Assisting John are Assistant Principals Carmela Casas, Jennifer LaMaida and Director of Related Services Christine Montemarano.
Besides the administrators, the MDP Elementary/Junior High School has a dedicated staff of experienced and enthusiastic teachers, assistant teachers, social workers, behavior counselors and related service providers. They provide every student with the opportunity to grow and develop to their fullest. For almost 50 years, MDP Elementary/JHS has helped students thrive in an atmosphere of compassion and caring. Our goal is for our students to graduate and attend high school, either at Martin De Porres High School or at a public High School.
Every day at the MDP Elementary/Jr. High School is exciting! The Curriculum is geared towards maximizing academic development. Martin De Porres utilizes a thematic learning program to highlight the relationship of knowledge across all academic disciplines. Our curriculum offers new and relevant subject matter to continually expand the minds of our students. At MDP we integrate technology to improve student learning processes and outcomes. Cultural and recreational experiences are ongoing throughout the year with field trips and experiences to various venues. Trips to museums, theater, and historical sites are aimed at connecting what is learned in the classroom to the outside world. And we cannot forget our annual fishing trip which is part of the summer program! As can be seen, academics are the foundation of MDP, but we create so many other opportunities for learning. Our focus here at MDP is on developing the “whole” child.
